Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Geoscience Montpellier (CNRS) - France

The "Laboratoire de Tectonophysique" of CNRS is staffed with 22 CNRS research scientists, lecturers and professors, 10 technicians, and 14 research students, with a large experience in field and laboratory experiments, the study for over 20 years of deep magmatic and hydrothermal systems, in particular from ocean drilling and ophiolites. It includes a section focused on the study of petrophysical properties of rock, with over 10 years experience in the handling of a Paterson press, and more than 20 years in the measurement of electrical properties. The french IODP committee for scientific ocean drilling is presently (2001-) headed from "Tectonophysique" in Montpellier. The "Laboratoire de Géophysique et Hydrodynamique en Forage", a sub-contractor to the ODP (1992-2003) and IODP (2004-) is also part of "Tectonophysique" and the French leading facility for borehole geophysics in the academic domain.

Role in the project

CNRS provides laboratories and extensive expertise in the domains of downhole geophysical measurements (or "logging") and the analysis of geothermal circulation in oceanic volcanic systems. Petrophysical studies in the laboratory will lead to a fundamental understanding of the measured parameters. A particular emphasis will be placed on measurements up to 600°C and the study of contribution of alteration on conductivity. Comparison of controlled laboratory environment with in-situ geothermal settings, theoretical data analysis and prior experience in instrument simulation and analysis - in particular relating to the geometrical factor of different electrode systems for resistivity tools, will be of significant value to the project.
